Tidying as Self-Care
Self-care doesn't have to be spooky! Tidying and organizing aren't just about creating a visually appealing space. I view them as powerful acts of self-care that can lead to a calmer mind and a more peaceful existence.
Over the years I've heard phrases like, "do it for your future self". You may have also seen videos about people's "closing shifts," where they prep their homes at the end of the night for the next day, or for the week ahead.
In the same vein, I view the act of tidying as preparation for your future. It's also an embrace of who you are now and who you are becoming. This can mean saying goodbye to possessions that served you in the past but that you don't want to take into your future. It can also mean confronting yourself and being truly honest with yourself. Perhaps there were possessions that never truly served you and now is the time to let them go.
For example, recently, I bought pants that were more aspirational than practical. They were a pair of wide legged pants that were "in style." But in all honesty, when wearing them, they were too baggy and I didn't like that they dragged on the ground. Thank you to these pants for teaching me that I don't like this style and that I'll avoid making the same mistakes in the future. While my example might be a simple act of letting go of one pair of pants, when we go through the entirety of our possessions and confront our past, present, AND future selves, it's truly transformative. YES, I will acknowledge it can be hard sometimes, especially when we get to the very end, with sentimental items.
Ultimately by letting go and expressing gratitude for what we choose to keep in our lives, we have more clarity and confidence in our decisions. It feels incredibly good to have a tidy space, with more room for experiences, rather than things. Clients report exercising more, dressing better, eating healthier, being more productive and spending more time with loved ones.
